How We Help

Couples sessions after domestic violence

Finding Solutions Together

Sometimes, individual counselling is not enough to stabilise a difficult situation. Especially in cases where women, despite having experienced violence, wish to stay with their partner, or where separated parents face problematic contact between the child and one parent – couples sessions can help to prevent further escalation.

In cooperation with KONFLIKT.GEWALT, a counselling and therapy service for men, women and young people, we offer couples sessions. These sessions prioritise the protection of the woman and children, the assessment of risk, and the accountability of the person who has used violence.

When couples sessions are helpful

  • Preparing for and supporting the return to a relationship after a stay in a women’s shelter
  • Clarifying and assessing risks in ongoing conflicts
  • Parent conversations regarding problematic father-child contact
  • Support in planning safe next steps

Procedure of couples sessions

Before each joint session, separate individual sessions take place:

  • The woman affected by violence is supported by the counselling service for women affected by violence in Thurgau.
  • The person who has used violence is prepared by KONFLIKT.GEWALT.

All sessions are free of charge. After the couples session, additional individual sessions can be offered upon request – to support the woman and to address the violent behaviour of the partner. The highest priority is the protection from further violence.
